The Problem with Python

Python is the most popular language for AI. It is very easy to read and write. But Python has a big secret: it is slow.

When you run a huge AI model, Python cannot do the heavy lifting. Instead, Python acts like a boss. It gives orders to other code written in fast languages like C or C++. This means developers have to learn two languages: one for easy logic (Python) and one for fast math (C++).

Two Ways to Write Code

Mojo lets you write slow, easy code or fast, strict code. You choose.

def (The Python Way)

Use `def` when you want to write code exactly like Python. It is flexible. You do not have to tell the computer what type of data you are using. It is easy, but it runs slower.

fn (The Mojo Way)

Use `fn` when you need extreme speed. It is strict. You must tell the computer exactly what type of data (like whole numbers or text) you are using. The computer loves this and runs it incredibly fast.

Data Storage: let vs var

When you write strict `fn` code, Mojo makes you choose how to store data. This keeps your program safe from errors and helps the computer run faster.

let (Cannot Change)

Use `let` for data that will stay exactly the same forever. It is locked.

Talking to the Hardware

Mojo does not hide the computer from you. It lets your code talk directly to the physical chips inside your machine.

Multiple CPUs

Python can only use one CPU core at a time (because of a rule called the GIL). Mojo breaks this rule and uses all your CPU cores at once.

Graphics Cards (GPUs)

GPUs are great for math. Mojo can send instructions straight to your graphics card to process thousands of numbers in a single second.

AI Chips (TPUs)

Modern computers have special chips just for AI. Mojo is built specifically to find these chips and use their full power.

Keep Your Old Python Code

You do not have to throw away your old work. Mojo can talk directly to standard Python. If you have a favorite Python tool, you can just import it into Mojo and use it immediately.

Python uses "Classes"

Messy Memory

In Python, you build custom objects using Classes. But Classes scatter data all over your computer's memory. Finding that data later is slow.

Mojo uses "Structs"

Perfect Packing

Mojo uses Structs. A Struct packs your data perfectly tight in memory. The computer can read tight data instantly. This is a massive speed boost.

Doing Math in Groups (SIMD)

Normally, a computer adds numbers one by one. First 1+1, then 2+2.

Mojo uses SIMD (Single Instruction, Multiple Data).

This means Mojo can group four, eight, or sixteen numbers together and do math on all of them in exactly the same step. It is like carrying four bags of groceries at once instead of making four trips.

Sharing Data Safely

When two parts of a fast program try to change the exact same piece of data at the exact same time, the computer crashes.

Mojo uses strict rules called Ownership. Think of data like a library book. Only one person can own the book at a time. If someone else wants it, they have to officially "borrow" it. This prevents crashes forever.

No More Middleman

The Slow Way (Interpreted)

Python reads your code line-by-line while the program is running. It constantly has to stop, translate the code, and then run it. This middleman slows everything down.

The Fast Way (Compiled)

Mojo translates your entire program into raw machine code before you ever run it. When you press play, there is no translating. The computer just runs the raw math instantly.

Teamwork (Parallel Processing)

If you have 1,000 images to process, it is slow to do them one by one. Mojo makes it incredibly easy to split that job into 4 equal pieces, and give those pieces to 4 different helpers (CPU cores) inside your computer. They all work at the same time, finishing the job 4 times faster.

Setting the Rules (Traits)

In Mojo, you can create contracts called Traits. A Trait says, "If you want to use this data, it must follow these rules."

If a piece of data breaks the rules, Mojo stops you before the program even runs. This prevents nasty surprises later.

Catching Mistakes Early

Programs have bugs. Files go missing. Networks go down.

Old languages let the program run anyway, which leads to massive crashes. Mojo forces you to write code that says exactly what to do if an error happens. It is like building a car with airbags; you hope you do not need them, but you are required to install them.
